Digital Breast Tomosynthesis

The medical community has long sought ways to improve the accuracy of breast cancer screenings. A new digital technology, Breast Tomosynthesis, has proven to be an advanced method compared to digital mammography, featuring higher cancer detection rates and fewer patient recalls for additional testing. Why is this important to you? Better sensitivity will likely translate into more lives saved. Lower recall rates result in fewer patients experiencing short-term anxiety awaiting test results, which is why Breast Tomosynthesis will have a positive impact on patient care for years to come. All SDMI imaging centers offer Breast Tomosynthesis/3D mammography. SDMI is certified as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

Does a 3D Mammogram hurt?

You may feel some discomfort during the compression but our mammography technologist will be there to help make the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

What is better a Mammogram or an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is rarely used alone to detect breast cancer, Mammography is the gold standard for breast cancer screening.

Will I be exposed to more radiation with a 3D exam?

Absolutely not. SDMI chose to install the GE Pristina second generation machines, which expose our patients to no more radiation than a traditional 2D mammograms.

Does insurance pay for my 3D Mammogram?

Most insurances currently cover 3D Mammography.

Does the 3D exam take more time?

It takes about the same time as a traditional digital mammogram. The total scan time is about 15-20 minutes.

What paperwork do I need?

Be sure your Physician sent a referral to SDMI or bring a copy with you.

How can I get this exam?

Ask your physician to indicate 3D Mammogram / Breast Tomosynthesis on your referral.
