Used to detect breast cancer, abnormalities in the breast or implant integrity. MRI captures multiple images to create a detailed picture.
For this procedure you will wear your gown open in the front and lie face down on an MRI table. Your breasts will be positioned into two holes with your arms above your head like superwoman.
For breast cancer detection:
Breast MRI for cancer detection is done with and without IV contrast. The radiologist will use your mammography images (so be sure to bring them if done somewhere other than SDMI) in conjunction with your MRI images to help diagnosis the presence of cancer. These exams must be scheduled in coordination with your menstrual cycle to minimize the risk of a false positive. Please schedule between 5-15 days after the first day of your last menstrual period. If you don't have a cycle or have already been diagnosed with breast cancer you can schedule at any time.
For implant integrity:
Breast MRI for implants is done without IV contrast and can be scheduled at any time. Please be sure to bring any breast related images, done somewhere besides SDMI, such as ultrasound or mammogram, with you to your appointment.
Once you are on the table and your IV has been administered the exam will last from 25-30 minutes.
The IV contrast agent is used to highlight any abnormalities in the breast.
This decreases the chance of a false positive examination.
No, you will be asked to lay face down on a table with a coil (the piece that allows the MRI to focus on the correct area) that is designed specifically for this procedure. It will have openings for your breasts to fit into.
No, each modalities are used in conjunction with one another to ensure you get the best detection possible.
Steinberg Diagnostic is proud to employ a diverse group of powerful women throughout our organization. In honor of International Women's Day we brought together our female doctors, executives, directors and chief technologists to talk about what it means to be a woman in business, who they look up to and more. Join the conversation and get to know these incredible women.
We spoke with the women leaders at SDMI and reminded them that 75% of management is female, see their reactions and hear what it means to them to work for an organization that is 100% local and 100% behind their women.
